ISO 17025:2005

ISO 17025 is the internationally recognised Quality Management Standard for all types of laboratories. The standard sets out the general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories and was updated in December 2005.

The 2005 revision aligns the previous version with ISO 9001:2000. The management system requirements of the two standards are now compatible, with ISO 17025 taking account of the specific relevance of these to laboratories.

ISO 17025 was written to incorporate all the ISO 9001 requirements that are relevant to the scope of testing and calibration services as well as specifying the technical requirements for technical competence .

The revised standard also makes it clear that meeting the requirements of ISO 17025 does not automatically mean that the requirements of ISO 9001 are met.

The standard is extremely stringent and accreditation is carried out directly by UKAS – United Kingdom Accreditation Service.
